Like every year, the province of Pistoia is home to many Saharawi children in their schools for the summer. The project "Sahrawi children, young ambassadors for peace" goes on for many years and has hosted Hundreds of children across Italy. A large delegation was hosted to Larchwood, where we met the leaders and the president of the Association of friendship with the Saharawi people Sadaqa. The Saharawi population seems to have become invisible and forgotten for many years, especially in Italy, although the situation is light years away from any solution. We then put a few questions to Didi Moctar, representative of Al Sadaqa, Mohamed Ahmed Segaier, accompanist, and teacher and former MP Saharawi Giacomo Di Vita, chairman of the association, to learn more about the current situation.
How is the current situation of Saharawi you?
I am 35 years that we live in refugee camps. Since 1991, when we accepted the UN-brokered ceasefire to hold a referendum, we are stuck in the same plight. Even the meetings organized by the UN between the Moroccan Government and that we should have been taken in the U.S. or in European countries are now locked and no one does anything for us.
What do you ask your people to Morocco? An independent state or autonomy under Morocco?
We demand that our people have the opportunity to independently choose their own destiny and democratic.
How are living conditions in refugee camps and in the territories of Western Sahara occupied by Morocco yet?
After the construction of the wall (early 80s) the situation has worsened. The wall is 2500 km long militarized and is constantly surrounded by landmines. Our population lives of humanitarian aid. For several years we get only the very first kinds of necessity, our children do not have powdered milk for ten years. For some 'time there are projects carried out by voluntary associations in the European period of Ramadan distribute fruits and vegetables. Even in the occupied territories, the situation is critical, the Saharawi are kept in conditions subject to the Moroccans and in addition there is the problem of the disappeared, arrested and then disappeared into thin air.
What should you consider that the international community for your people?
We are really fed up and we expect that this situation is resolved. We live in worse conditions beasts! Neither the UN nor the European states have been able to help. Although not everyone in Europe in solidarity with our people. France is filomarocchina and the English crown is a close friend of the king of Morocco. In addition Spain can not afford to support the Saharawi independence as it has in many instances its territory for independence.
What is the importance of projects like this for you and your children?
For children it is important not to spend the summer in a tent at 50 degrees. We accept any aid, economic and human. The association has the Sadaqa fields and three nursery also carries out various sponsorships. We believe that there are three key things on which to focus: the children, then the school and their literacy, health and the elderly. Our population has survived, despite all these years because we have focused on this.
